Hollow Metal Door Install
March 10, 2021
A contractor reached out to Door 28, Inc. with a unique challenge: installing an egress-only door into an older fixed hollow metal window wall. The customer needed a functional emergency exit from a conference room while keeping the new door discreet. From the exterior, they wanted the door to blend in seamlessly—appearing as though it was simply part of the window wall.
With precise measurements, we ordered a custom door to fit the opening. One of the biggest challenges was matching the glass grid pattern. Since each pane of glass was individual, recreating the same effect on the new door required careful planning and fabrication.
Our team removed the center section of the window wall and installed the new emergency exit door. Fortunately, the existing threshold from the original three-panel system aligned perfectly with the new egress door. We then installed:
- Von Duprin exit device rim panic hardware to meet egress requirements
- Surface-mounted LCN door closer
- Automatic door bottom sweep seal for better performance and sealing
To achieve the seamless look, we fabricated a custom metal grid that matched the exact width and height of the surrounding glass stops, welding 1” metal to create a consistent profile. After finishing with a professional glazing product, the result was a perfectly blended custom egress door installation that met both safety standards and the customer’s aesthetic expectations.
